Restaurant / Food

THE PROBLEM:
MiSensors was contacted by the manager of a popular US based restaurant franchise. He had came across our products when searching for a solution to an issue they had with temperatures in one restaurant’s walk-in cooler. A week earlier the cooler’s compressor failed at some point during the day and went unnoticed until the following day when a chef noticed that the cooler was warm and some of the food had spoiled. To be safe, they had to dispose of all the food in the cooler and restrict restaurant service until the cooler was fixed and restocked. The company wanted to implement a reliable temperature monitoring system, that would alert restaurant managers if temperatures in there coolers were fluctuating to far out of range.

They realized that their process of manually tracking temperatures was not enough to protect them against the possibility of inventory loss. They needed an automated solution to track temperatures.

THE SOLUTION:
MiSensors recommended the customer use leaded temperature sensors and a MiSensors gateway.

The sensor housings were attached to the outside of their walk-in coolers and Freezers with temperature probe running through the door seals and attached inside. MiSensors provides a reliable remote monitoring solution that includes other useful wireless sensors, so the customer also installed open/ closed sensors on the walk-in cooler’s door to tell them if it has not been properly closed.

The sensor data is sent wirelessly to the MiSensors gateway 80 feet away, which sends the information to the MiSensors online sensor monitoring system. The temperature sensors were set to check and record temperatures every 20 minutes. Notifications were setup to alert their staff if any door is not fully shut or if temperature readings are above their limit, allowing them to respond appropriately.

THE RESULT ( ROI ):
For an initial investment of less than $500, the customer was able to deploy a comprehensive solution addressing all of their needs. Each walk-in refrigerator/freezer that the company is monitoring contains upwards of $20,000 in food product. Within the first month the system alerted their staff of an incident where a cooler door was not shut completely at the end of a shift, which could have resulted in several thousands of dollars in spoiled inventory. Since their initial install, the customer has deployed additional monitoring systems in six more of it’s restaurants that have experienced similar issues.

THE PROBLEM:

MiSensors was contacted by the manager of a US based convenience store chain. He had came across our products and believed they could solve a problem they were having with

temperatures in their produce coolers. Their produce waste numbers were increasing, and they wanted to get a better understanding of why. The only way for them to know when a cooler was malfunctioning was by employees stocking the coolers to notice if there was an issue. The company wanted to implement a reliable temperature monitoring system, that would alert store managers if temperatures in there coolers were fluctuating to far out of range.

They realized that their process of manually tracking temperatures was not enough to protect them against the possibility of inventory loss. They needed a solution to human error and fast changing temperatures.

THE SOLUTION:

MiSensors provides a reliable remote monitoring solution that includes wireless temperature sensors as well as a variety of other useful sensors. The company deployed standard wireless temperature sensors as well as probed wireless temperature sensors.

The temperature sensor housings were attached under the display edge of the coolers, making them inconspicuous, with temperature probes running to harder to reach areas. The sensor data is sent wirelessly to a MiSensors cellular gateway 400 feet away using one range extender mounted in the ceiling area half-way between the two locations. The gateway sends the information to MiSensors, the online sensor monitoring system. The sensors were set to check and record temperatures every 15 minutes. Notifications were setup to alert the manager if a temperature was above their set limit, allowing him to respond appropriately.

THE RESULT ( ROI ):

For an initial investment of ~$1000, the customer deployed a comprehensive temperature monitoring solution in one of it’s stores. MiSensors recommended that this customer place wireless temperature sensors at various locations within the coolers to monitor the temperature as well as find out if there were variances between different locations in the coolers. They placed wireless sensors in a produce cooler and found that there were warmer spots. Being able to determine the location of warmer and colder spots in the cooler, they rearranged the location of different types of produce based on their storage temperature recommendations. The trial allowed them to determine temperature fluctuations in their produce cooler minimizing spoilage and waste.

In the first three months of using the system, it alerted the manager of rising temperatures caused by a faulty compressor. The inventory was moved and the issue resolved before any spoilage occurred. The trial was successful which resulted in the store deploying additional sensors in its other food coolers and the company implementing the temperature monitoring solution in other stores.

School Cafeterias

CUSTOMER OVERVIEW:
Llano Independent School District, Llano Texas. Llano ISD has a rich, strong tradition of excellence in education. They currently serve approximately 1800 students across 4 campuses (2 Elementary Schools, 1 Jr. High and 1 High School). Community involvement, parent participation, dedicated staff members, and outstanding students combine to make Llano ISD one of the best in the state of Texas.

THE PROBLEM:
A few times each year, the school district would have their cafeteria walk-in coolers and freezers go down due to reasons such as power outages, blown fuses / breakers or even cooler equipment failures. On average, the school district would have at least one instance every year where they would have to scrap the contents of a walk-in cooler or freezer due to spoilage. While the school district has cafeteria staff on site during school hours, often times they are unable to tell if there is an issue with the walk-ins until it is too late. Their current processes were not enough to protect them against the possibility of inventory loss. MiSensors was contacted by Lajuana Wimberley, the Director of Nutrition for the school district. She was searching for a reliable temperature monitoring system that would alert her immediately if temperatures in there walk-in coolers / freezers were fluctuating too far out of range. She wanted to run a trial in one of their school cafeterias and had narrowed her search to 4 different solutions. She ultimately choose MiSensors due to the simplicity of installation and use, as well as the value (cost, features and reliability).

THE SOLUTION:
MiSensors recommended the use of leaded temperature sensors and a MiSensors Ethernet Gateway. The sensor housings were attached to the outside of their walk-in coolers and Freezers with temperature probes running through the door seals and attached inside. Server Rooms

THE PROBLEM:

Server rooms and data centers are full of expensive computers and networking equipment that are designed to operate within a given temperature range. The electronics also need to be kept away from water. MiSensors was contacted by the manger of a large corporations internal data center, that had an issue with a plumbing leak over the weekend. While their existing system monitored for temperatures and humidity, they had no existing water detection system in place.

The previous weekend, a toilet leak outside of the data center caused water to cover the floor which leaked into the server room. The water caused an electrical short which took down several server stacks and damaged a handful of servers.

THE SOLUTION:

MiSensors provides a reliable remote monitoring solution that includes wireless water detection sensors as well as a variety of other useful sensors. The company deployed wireless water sensors throughout the server room to detect any water. MiSensors wireless gateways support up to 100 wireless sensors each, so the company also decided to extend their wireless sensor network by deploying temperature sensors in their HVAC ducts to more closely monitor their environmental control system.

THE PROBLEM:

Using a secure login, the company is able to view and track temperatures for each cooling unit and print a report for their compliance records. Notifications were setup to alert key people via text and/or e-mail when temperatures are nearing compliance regulated levels, allowing them to either move temperature sensitive inventory to back up storage coolers and/or to repair the refrigeration unit before it fails.

If the bearings are starting to go, the pump will get hot and vibrate more than normal.

Due to the steel and concrete construction of the buildings, they placed two wireless range extenders in opposite buildings to repeat the data from their boiler rooms to the central gateway. Notifications were setup to alert the property manager if temperatures are out of safe range and if excessive vibration is detected on a pump motor.

Property Management

THE PROBLEM:
MiSensors was contacted by the property manager for an apartment complex. Notifications were setup to alert the property manager immediately, via text message, if water is detected or if temperatures fall outside of a set range.

THE RESULT ( ROI ):

Before implementing MiSensors wireless sensors, the property management company had to repair the water damage to the two affected units. This included replacing carpets and baseboards in both units as well as having to replace damaged belongings for the occupied downstairs unit, costing them over $12,000. The total cost of the remote monitoring solution for the 12 unit apartment building was ~$900. Since installing the system, water sensors detected an incident where a third floor apartment’s air conditioning unit had a build up of condensation which did not drain properly due to a clogged drain line. The water overflowed the drain reservoir and ran into the water heater pan, triggering the water sensor alert. Maintenance staff was able to respond immediately to prevent any water damage. Had the water sensor not notified them, there was a high probability that water would have overflowed the water heater pan, and seaped through the flooring into a downstairs unit. After two months of using the system, they decided to implement sensors throughout the remaining buildings of their complex.

Manufacturing

THE PROBLEM:
When you are a large manufacturing company, there are countless areas where wireless sensing solutions can increase efficiencies and productivity. MiSensors was approached by a reputable product manufacturer looking for a solution to some issues they were having on their production floor. They were having issues with personnel not being at their stations while equipment was running. This issue was leading to prolonged running of equipment which was causing premature failing of the electrical motors due to overheating. The company wanted to implement a reliable, low-cost system that would track how long equipment is being run, as well as know if the user leaves the work area while the equipment is running.

THE SOLUTION:

MiSensors recommended the use of wireless voltage detection sensors, temperature sensors with probes, infrared motion sensors and a MiSensors gateway.

The voltage detection sensors were integrated to the electric motors, allowing the system to detect when a motor starts and stops running, as well as how long it ran. Temperature sensors were attached to the motor enclosure, with probes attached to the motor casings so they could monitor motor temperatures. Infrared motion sensors were placed above the area to detect when a user is in the control area.

The sensor data is sent wirelessly to the MiSensors gateway, which sends the information to the MiSensors online sensor monitoring system. The sensors were set to detect and track motor run times, check motor temperatures every 10 minutes and notify a manager if a machine is running while there is no operator in the control area.

THE RESULT ( ROI ):

MiSensors makes it easy to realize the immediate return on investment. For an investment of ~$1,400, the customer was able to deploy a comprehensive solution addressing all of their needs for 5 work stations. Within the first month alone the system alerted their staff of several incidents where equipment was left running unattended, allowing them to implement new procedures. Being able to track motor temperatures, in conjunction with how long the motor was running, allowed their maintenance staff to understand when a motor’s bearings were faulty and the motor was nearing failure. This information allowed the company to realize savings in decreased equipment repairs and downtime, as well as realize savings by tracking and optimizing how long equipment was running to complete tasks, saving on electricity costs.
